DAVID HART RELEASES 2nd VOLUME OF CANADIAN WATER POLO HISTORY

Water Polo Canada Alumni and 4-time Olympian David Hart has launched the second volume of his History of Canadian Water Polo series “Volume 2 (1930-1967) – Hamilton emerges from a municipal pool” . Three years after the release of “ Volume 1 (1886-1929) – Montreal first outside the United Kingdom”, the second volume of the series sheds light on the emergence of water polo in Hamilton, Ontario.

Once again, this fantastic sport story is the culmination of years of research, through newspaper reports and the author’s own personal archives. Volume 2 picks up the story in 1930, at a pivotal moment; the building of a municipal pool in Hamilton for the British Empire Games and the subsequent hiring of 1928 Olympic swimming medalist, Jimmy Thompson. Thompson would go on to create one of the most successful water polo clubs of its era, the Hamilton Aquatic Club. In this second book, author David Hart, focuses his attention on three major threads in Canadian water polo history: the dynasty of the Young Men’s Hebrew Association of Montreal in the 1930s; the rise of the Hamilton Aquatic Water Polo Club, who would challenge Montreal’s supremacy by the end of the 1930s; and the impact of the Hungarian revolution and creation of the Hungarian Water Polo Club in Toronto in the late 1950s.

“I’m excited to release the second part of my history series. As a young swimmer and water polo player whose career began in 1961, I had a unique opportunity to see, meet and speak to many of the athletes, coaches and officials who competed in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. A lot of the historical material, including photographs used in this second book, were obtained personally from these legends, a couple of whom were my earliest coaches. I sincerely hope people will enjoy this second volume.” commented David Hart.

Volume one and Volume two of the History of Canadian Water Polo series are available for purchase on the Water Polo Canada Online Store.

WATER POLO CANADA ANNOUNCES CHAMPIONSHIPS FOR 2020-2021 SEASON

Water Polo Canada (WPC) announced earlier today that the National Championship League (NCL) would be transitioning to a series of Open National Championship events rather than the traditional league model for the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although WPC feels that this transition is best for the 2021 season, WPC does plan to return to the regular NCL format next fall for the 2021-2022 season.

Water Polo Canada’s objective is to host the following events between May and July 2021:

  • Senior National Championship
  • 19U National Championship
  • 17U National Championship
  • 15U Western National Championship
  • 15U Eastern National Championship

LATEST UPDATE

Hopefully everyone has been safe and healthy throughout the past five months.

An email will be coming with a few days with the latest update on what is happening beginning in September.

Due to the virus, UofT and high school pools have been shut and remain closed until the first week of September.

While the email coming out in a few days will detail some information, it will be incomplete due to the fact the clb has not been given answers as to pool availability, type of practice allowed, etc

Stay tuned!

NEW MUSIC VIDEO

It has been a while since we posted but interesting news out of the pool has surfaced (pun intended!).

Golden Jets and UofT women’s coach and 4-time Olympian David Hart is also a music composer and member of the “Occasional Angels” band.

David’s latest song “Oh, Delilah” has just dropped and there is another connection to the Golden Jets. The star of the song video is the Jets/UofT’s international Ana Miroslavic!

HOME WORKOUTS

in this crazy time, all the coaches and executives at the Golden Jets are hoping every member and his/her family is safe and healthy AND doing the right thing by following the federal and provincial social distancing guidelines.

Some members have enquired about workouts to do at home.  Actually, we would have sent suggestions of specific things to do AND suggestions of web sites with videos to follow.  HOWEVER, we were prevented from doing this due to the WPC insurance situation.

Below you will find the amended clause of the WPC insurance policy relating to home training until September 20, 2020.  The process is very clear.

We hope you understand.

VIDEO SUGGESTIONS

In this crazy time, there are, of course, no competitions or club activites to report. No games. No practices. Certainly not what we all envisioned back in September.
Due to insurance issues with WPC, we cannot send you suggestions of workouts OR web sites to seek out to find workouts to do at home (see next post).
So, another thing that perhaps can help maintain the connection to water polo is game video. To that extent, club Head Coach and Founder George Gross, Jr. will be starting up a weekly or bi-weekly video review session of international, collegiate and Golden Jets club games.
Even if members are not involved in the actual video breakdown session, everyone can enjoy the game video on their own.
A few days before each video breakdown session, George will post a link to the game being reviewed. You can watch it beforehand to get familiar with the action and do your own analysis.
Our first video is the Hungary-Spain preliminary round game from this year’s European Championships (the teams met again later in the gold medal game). The game ended in a 11-11 tie. When you see the player introductions, you will see what we all wish we could have here!

U19 BOYS GO 1-2 AT K-W WINTER CLASSIC

The Toronto Golden Jets U19 boys players got their first taste of action this year at the 2019 K-W Winter Classic event last weekend.

The squad was comprised mostly of players not in the top unit of the team that will compete in the national league (NCL).

The Jets opened with a strong 15-6 win over Southwest.  That win was followed by a close one goal loss to the Mavs.  On the last day, the team only fielded 9 players due to the snow storm and lost 12-8 to the Shadow.

The team’s leading scorer throughout the tournament was Sebastien Nisker who averaged 5 goals a game.

Next up is the opening NCL tournament this weekend at Markham’s Pan Am pool.

JETS STRONG at UofT FALL CLASSIC

With training for the age group part of the Golden Jets having just started and the senior teams not yet training regularly, the club placed four different line-ups in the water to play games at the University of Toronto Fall Classic.

First up, the Jets senior men had their first ever meeting against the United States Military Academy (ARMY). Army was making its first ever appearance in Canada.

The Jets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and finished the first quarter ahead 3-1. Then the Jets players’ experience kicked in as the team ran off a 6-0 second period. The final two quarters were low scoring affairs with the Jets winning both by a goal (2-1, 3-2) to win 14-4.

Rudy Despaigne led the way with a hat trick while Tuna Tali and David Rapoport each netted a pair of goals. Sukhmun Hare, Paul Spooner, Emirhan Ozdemir, Petar Kovacevic, Dusan Lazarevic and Kane Law added singles.

The next day, the Jets U19s (plus one) faced off against Ann Arbor (Michigan) and came away with a 15-6 victory. The opening quarter was close as the Jets opened up a 4-2 advantage. Then a 4-0 run in the second period paved the way to a 8-3 half time lead. The teams traded goals throughout the third quarter until the Jets exploded for three goals in the last minute and a half to surge out in front 14-5.

Rapoport led all scorers with five goals. Kovacevic and Luka Pejanovic each notched a hat trick while four other added single tallies.

In the second of three matches on the day, a Jets Co-Ed line-up took on a Cleveland Co-Ed team and had its way with a 16-3 win.
The Jets ran away with things in the first quarter scoring five unanswered goals. Then, from the middle of the second period until the last minute of the game, the Jets went on a 10-0 run.

Age group head coach Predrag Pejanovic popped in two markers and eight others shared the rest of the scoring.

The third game of the day featured another game against Ann Arbor but this time the Jets Co-Ed team hit the pool instead of the U19s.

The game proved to be a thrilling one with numerous lead changes. The teams traded goals five times to be in a 5-5 tie early in the second quarter. The Jets then fell behind 11-9 entering the final frame but roared back with three unanswered goals to take the lead. Ann Arbor promptly tied things up at 12. With a minute and a half to go, the Jets found the back of the net to take the lead only to see the visitors score with one second left to leave the game in a dead heat.

Rapoport again paced the attack with a hat trick while newcomer Melchior Rochefoucauld, Leo Baotic and Sebastien Nisker all potted a pair of goals. Bora Kaya, Ahmad Wagner, Pejanovic and Law rounded out the scoring.

The tournament proved to be a great way for the Jets players from various age groups to get the feel of the ball again! Good job!

JAFFE OUTSTANDING IN GOAL FOR CANADA

Toronto Golden Jets MVP goalie, Rachael Jaffe, just completed a great run representing Canada at the FISU World University Games in Naples, Italy.

Jaffe provided outstanding goal tending right from the start of the tournament as Canada opened with a 12-10 win over an impressive Japan team. In the game, Jaffe stopped two penalty shots and continually thwarted dangerous Japanese scoring opportunities.

After a loss to eventual champion Hungary and two easy victories against France and the Czech Republic, Canada had to face its international nemesis the USA in the knockout quarter final.

Jaffe came up with numerous key saves that had the American players wondering where this goalie came from. The teams battled to a 5-5 regulation tie, the low scoring affair a testament to the great goal tending. In the penalty shootout to decide the winner, the Americans shot second and matched goals with Canada for 4 rounds. Then the Canadians completed a perfect first round and watched as Jaffe made the only save of the round to send Canada on to the semi-finals.

Eventually, Canada finished in 4th place with its only losses coming against the three medal winners.

Rachael will take a brief break after a prolonged training and competition season before getting back in the pool in Toronto at the end of August with UofT and the Golden Jets.

Congratulations to Rachael!
