GOLDEN JETS SENIOR WOMEN WIN SEASON OPENER

GOLDEN JETS SENIOR WOMEN DOWN CAPITAL WAVE

The Toronto Golden Jets senior women's team travelled the short distance to the Markham Pan Am pool this past weekend to play in the 2024-25 edition of the Senior NCL. The tournament was the first of four regular season qualification tournaments leading to the National Championships in May.

Due to pool availability, the team only had three practices available leading up to the first game. However, due to the excellent work done during the Fall by Associate Head Coach Evan Price who is also the Head Coach for UofToronto, several of the players were in excellent shape and skill level coming off a 11th consecutive perfect season.

The NCL season opener saw the Jets face off against Ottawa's Capital Wave. Toronto struck first on a counterattack goal by Sarah August. After the Wave tied things up, August responded with another counterattack to restore the one goal lead. However, the Wave again pulled even with just over two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. A pair of Jets veterans, Brittany Sinclair and Annie Chinneck, found the back of the net to lift the Jets to a 4-2 lead before the horn sounded.

While the Jets' first quarter goals all came at even-strength, the team turned to its power play to extend the lead. Three minutes in, Josie Andrist scored from the left side and, with a minute to go, August notched her hattrick goal from the right. Sandwiched between the power play goals was a counterattack strike from rookie Kriya Vohra. Goalie Hana Truchla was outstanding in the net as the Jets defence posted its first shutout quarter of the year leaving the team with a 7-2 halftime advantage.

In the third period, the Jets' counterattack provided three more tallies in the first two and a half minutes to extend the lead to 10-2 thanks to Vohra (twice) and Andrist. A couple of minutes later the Wave scored on a penalty shot leaving the Jets ahead 11-3 entering the final frame.

A forgettable effort by the Jets at both ends of the pool allowed the Wave to secure a 4-1 fourth quarter win but it was not enough and the Golden Jets came away with a solid 12-7 victory.

Vohra with 4 goals and August with a hattrick paced the Jets' scoring. Andrist and Chinneck each popped in a pair while SInclair added the final tally. Truchla made 8 saves and had 3 steals playing the first two and a half quarters of the game.
