SENIOR WOMEN WIN SILVER MEDAL AT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

2025-05-19

The Toronto Golden Jets senior women won the silver medal at the recently completed National Championships in Gatineau, Quebec.

It is the first silver medal in over 30 years for the senior women.

The Jets were placed in Group A along with B.C. Storm (Vancouver) and Touski (Montreal) to play the round robin preliminaries.

In the opener vs Storm, the Jets fell behind 2-1 after one quarter of play. Then, the team gave up two goals in the first minute and a half of the second period to fall behind 4-1. So, Head Coach George Gross, Jr. called an early time out to settle the players down and hopefully get them focussed on their play.

The move had immediate effect as the Jets played the rest of the quarter even but still trailed 5-2 at the half.

In the third quarter, the Jets began to slowly take control of the pace of the game. Toronto outscored B.C. 3-1 to get the score to within one trailing 6-5 entering the final frame as the defence tightened up and the offence began to roll.

The Jets offence then exploded in the fourth period and the Jets roared home with a 6-0 effort to take the match 11-6.

Shae LaRoche and Hannah Levin led the way for the Jets with hat tricks. Brittany Sinclair and Devon Lynch each popped in a pair of goals while Josie Andrist rounded out the scoring. After a shaky start, goaltender Rachael Jaffe settled down and provided steady work giving up only one goal in the second half.

Just three and a half hours later, the Jets were back in the pool to face off against Touski.

The teams played evenly in the opening quarter with the Jets coming out of it with a narrow 3-2 lead.

Toronto found its energy in the second quarter winning it 4-1 and stretching the lead to 7-3 at the half.

Touski pushed back with a one goal victory in the third period but the Jets countered with a one goal margin of their own in the fourth en route to an 11-7 victory.

LaRoche and Levin again notched hat tricks to pace the Jets scoring. Lynch again netted a pair. Center forwards Lillian Wheatley and Georgia Springate plus Sinclair added singles. Jaffe was strong in goal.

The two victories meant that the Jets automatically went to the semi-finals to await the winner of the quarter-final match the next afternoon between the Montreal-based squads CAMO and Touski.

The semi-final with CAMO proved to be a rematch of the gold medal game at the Eastern Conference championships.

The Jets had their strongest opening quarter of the championships jumping out to a 4-2 first quarter lead. A 2-1 win in the second period pushed the lead to 6-3 at half time.

The third quarter proved to be the best for the Jets taking it 3-0 and pulling away to a 9-3 advantage entering the final period and an eventual 11-6 win. The victory catapulted the Jets into its first National Championships gold medal this century.

Springer led all Jets scorers with a hattrick. Amy Pearce celebrated her birthday with a pair of goals that were matched by LaRoche. Andrist, Levin, Lynch and Sinclair all found twine once. Jaffe was outstanding in goal making 13 saves.

Facing the defending champion Calgary Renegades for the gold medal was going to be a tall order for the Jets and, in the end, it was too tall of an order as the Jets fell 12-5.

The Jets hung tough in the first quarter trailing 3-2 entering the second period. However, the next three quarters were all 3-1 wins for the Renegades as the Jets offence proved ineffectual and several defensive lapses resulted in easy tallies for Calgary.

Andrist tallied twice while LaRoche, Lynch and Abbey Jackson scored once each. Jaffe was again outstanding in the net making 10 saves including a penalty shot from former Olympian Kyra Christmas.

The championship final performance notwithstanding, the Jets women played three great games and were full measure for the silver medal. CONGRATULATIONS to all the team members: Rachael Jaffe, Sidney Gagne, Karen Gibson (the oldest player in the tournament by a decade!), Josie Andrist, Devon Lynch, Sarah August, Hannah Levin, Amy Pearce, Abbey Jackson, Lillian Wheatley, Brittany Sinclair, Shae LaRoche, Hana Truchla, Julia Mic and Georgia Springate.
