About Us

The Toronto Golden Jets Water Polo Club, founded in January 1980, was the vision of two-time Olympian George Gross Jr., who was born and raised in the heart of Toronto. Conveniently located at The University of Toronto, in the center of the city, the Golden Jets have become a staple in Toronto’s water polo community.

Originally starting as a senior men’s program, the Golden Jets quickly rose to prominence, reaching the championship final every year in its first four full seasons and winning the title once. An early highlight included founder George Gross Jr. winning both the Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Coach awards at the 1981 National Championships in Edmonton—an achievement that remains unmatched in Canadian water polo.

Three Golden Jets players—George Gross Jr., Geoff Brown, and John Anderson—represented Canada at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, while goalie Bryan Robertson, who narrowly missed selection, went on to become Canada’s starting goalie for over a decade and a half.

In 1982, a senior women’s program was added to the club, and in 1991, three Golden Jets players—Karen Gibson, Karen Morrison, and Heather Smith—represented Canada at the World Aquatic Games in Australia, winning a silver medal.

The club’s influence expanded in the mid-'80s with the introduction of age group programming, leading the Golden Jets to win the first five Ontario Provincial Overall Club Points trophies.

At the turn of the century, the Golden Jets Senior Men made it to the gold medal game at the National Championships 13 out of 17 years, once winning the final by 10 goals, without any current or former national team players.

In 2025, the Golden Jets Senior Women’s program will launch Canada’s first-ever NCAA competition program, competing against NCAA Division 1, 2, and 3 schools over three months, with the inaugural season featuring 25 games.
