SENIOR WOMEN BACK IN WIN COLUMN
2024-12-14The Toronto Golden Jets senior women's team got back into the NCL win column at the Markham Pan Am Pool with a convincing 17-6 victory over Ottawa Titans Red.
The Jets roared out to a 4-0 lead in the first four minutes of play on the strength of two goals out of the center by rookie Georgia Springate and a pair of counter attack strikes by Sarah August. However, the second unit stalled in the second half of the quarter and gave up a marker to leave Toronto ahead 4-1 heading into the second period.
Suzan Chappuie notched a power play goal to put the Jets up 5-1 but then Titans Red slipped in consecutive goals to pull within two at 3-5. Veteran Annie Chinneck used the power play to restore the Jets' three goal lead by half time.
Chappuie opened the quarter scoring for the second consecutive time with a rocket from six meters out. Then the Jets players went to sleep which allowed Ottawa to score three times and get within one at 6-7. However, Josie Andrist with a pair and Chappuie to end the quarter gave the Jets some breathing room with a 10-6 lead heading into the final frame.
The Jets woke up for the fourth quarter and exploded for seven unanswered goals paced by three more tallies from Springer.
Springer held the hot hand with five goals followed closely by Chappuie with four. August produced a hat trick. Andrist tallied twice while Alexandra Lee, Daryn Schell and Chinneck chipped in with a goal apiece.
After giving up three goals on three shots to start the third quarter, rookie goalie Shaya Oghyani settled down and shut out Ottawa the rest of the way making five saves in her one half of work filling in for rookie starter Grace Bobyk.
