The Toronto Golden Jets senior women rolled through the second phase of the National Championship League (NCL) in Kingston sweeping all four games to move into first place in the Eastern Conference. The victories upped the Jets record to 7-1 on the season.
Facing Ottawa Black in the opener, Toronto grabbed a 2-1 first quarter lead and extended it to 5-3 at the half. It was a perfect 3-0 third quarter which cemented the 8-5 victory.
Josie Andrist and Devon Lynch each popped in a pair of goals with singles coming from Shae La Roche, Sarah August, Suzie Chappuie and Aoife Murray.
It was the veteran-laden Touski squad from Montreal up next for the Golden Jets and Toronto jumped out to a 4-1 opening quarter advantage. However, Touski stormed back in the second period to narrow the gap to 5-4. The Jets then won each of the two remaining quarters by a single marker to preserve a 10-7 victory.
La Roche and Chappuie led the way with hat tricks. Annie Chinneck, Julia Mic, Brittany Sinclair and August added singles. Goalies Rachael Jaffe and Hana Truchla split the duties with both posting five saves.
The young Ottawa Reds were the opposition in the third contest. The more experienced Golden Jets posted three dominating quarters (5-2, 5-1, 6-0) to move comfortably ahead 16-3 heading into the final frame before settling for a 16-5 win.
Chappuie and Lynch paced the attack with four goals each. August and Mic netted two while single tallies came from the hands of Kriya Vohra, Amy Pearce, Daryn Schell and Andrist.
The fourth game pitted the young Mavs aganst the Jets. The Jets roared out of the gate and grabbed a 5-1 opening quarter lead. The second period ended in a 3-3 tie as the Jets held the four goal advantage heading into the third quarter. Another strong offensive thrust shot the lead up to seven goals at 13-6. In the end, the Jets prevailed 16-10.
La Roche and Lynch were the top shooters with four goals apiece. Chappuie notched her second hat trick with Georgia Springate, Andrist, Mic and Vohra scoring once. The final tally was a rare "goalie goal" as netminder Hana Truchla went to the front court on the last attack of the third quarter before firing a shot into the top left corner.
Phase three of the NCL regular season will take place in the Markham Pan Am pool March 7-9. Prior to that, the current university members of the Jets team will represent the Golden Jets on a southern California 9-day, 11-game competition tour against NCAA varsity teams.
