The Toronto Golden Jets senior women's team traveled to Lexington, Virginia for a NCAA Division 1 tournament hosted by the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).
The squad, composed exclusively of current University of Toronto players, traveled 12 hours by bus through five states and had to jump off the bus and into the pool to play the host Keydets. The long ride and early start to the day left the Jets unable to get a rhythm until the fourth quarter but could not pull out the win in a close 13-12 loss.
However, after another disappointing performance the next morning (loss to McKendree U), the Jets found their stride in shocking fashion that afternoon.
Playing against the Bucknell Bison, the Jets jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead. The defence was stellar, led by the outstanding goaltending of Hana Truchla who blocked two penalty shots in the game and made numerous saves in all situations that left the Bison attackers shaking their heads in frustration.
By the end of the third quarter, the Jets had widened their lead to five goals at 8-3. Fatigue set in during the final frame but Toronto hung on for a well-deserved 9-7 win. It marked the first time that any Toronto team has beaten the Bison.
Next up is an 11 games in 9 days competition tour of NCAA varsity schools in southern California.
