The Toronto Golden Jets senior women’s team earned the bronze medal with a 9-3 victory over Montreal Touski at the opening NCL season tournament Sunday at the Scarborough Pan Am pool.
The opening quarter played out as closely as games between the teams teams did last year. Toronto and Touski traded goals in the first half of the period with the Jets adding a second tally to go ahead 2-1 heading into the second quarter.
Things took a never-before-seen turn between the teams when the Jets offence exploded for five unanswered goals propelling the home side to a 7-1 half time lead. Hannah Levin with her second of the game started the blitz. Devon Lynch celebrated her birthday by launching a laser bar-down from seven meters to put the Jets up by three. Leanne Bolstad then scored on a power play and Lynch followed that with a penalty shot conversion. Sidney Low rounded out the quarter with her first of the match.
The Jets’ strong crashing defence coupled with the steady play of netminder Grace Bobyk produced another shutout quarter. The offence cooled off but still managed a goal as Levin completed her hattrick.
After Josie Andrist put Toronto ahead 9-1, Touski struck for two power play goals in the latter stages.
Levin led the way for the Jets with her three goals. Lynch and Andrist each popped in a pair while Bolstad and Low notched singles.
The Jets women finished the weekend with three wins, one loss and one tie.
The next NCL league weekend will be at Markham’s Pan Am pool on the weekend of February 6-8.
