NEW AGE GROUP SEASON TO START

After a restricted restart to our programming last year, we are able to go back to more regular practice schedules starting this weekend.
As we continue to evolve as a club, the various facets are taking on more up-to-date scheduling and structures.
Below, you will find the current “plan” for this coming training year. Of course, the final structure/scheduling will be dependent on the number of members in each age category.

In assessing whom we had in an abbreviated year last year and what the best training environment would be, we have concluded that the best solution to start out the year is to offer the following:

Boys 11-17 – Tuesdays 8-9:30pm (Central Tech), Thursdays 8-9:30pm (Central Tech) and Sundays 5-7pm (UofT) – depending on numbers and costs, an additional practice may be added (likely on Friday night) and the boys might be split into two groups (11-13 and 14-17)

Girls 11-17 – Tuesdays 8-9:30pm (Central Tech), Thursdays 8-9:30pm (Central Tech) and Sundays 5-7pm (UofT) – depending on numbers and costs, an additional practice may be added (likely on Saturday afternoon or Monday evening) and the girls might be split into two groups (11-13 and 14-17)

Coed 6-10 – Fridays 6pm-7pm (waiting for confirmation of time available from two pools) and Saturdays 12pm-1pm (might be changed to Sundays 5pm-6pm)

Families that have siblings in two different categories WILL be able to have them train at the same time. For example, two sisters aged 8 and 12 could train together in the girls 11-17 slots OR in the Coed 6-10 slots. This would be a discussion between parents and coaches.

Our competition plan is to play in local provincial tournaments as well as do home and homes with area teams. The big trip will occur in early April (date to be confirmed) when we travel to the USA to play in a large age group tournament (separate boys and girls teams).

Phase 1 – Sep 11, 2022 – May 28, 2023
Phase 2 – June 1, 2023 – Aug 11, 2023

This is shaping up to be an exciting year for the Golden Jets age group program and we hope you will part of it!

JETS MEN WIN SILVER AT NATIONALS

The Toronto Golden Jets senior men made it to another gold medal game at the National Championships.
The journey at the National Championships began with a quarter-final match up against CAMO 2 (Montreal) which gained the 8th seed due to the withdrawal of the #4 seed from the Western Conference.
Reflecting a layoff of 6 weeks between games, both teams took a quarter to get back into game form trading single goals. The Jets then jumped out to a two goal half-time lead thanks to a 4-2 second period.
The Jets blew the game open with a strong 5-0 third quarter to lead 10-3 heading into the 4th quarter. Another strong period from the Jets offence led to a 6-2 quarter and a 16-5 win.
Diego Gonzalez and Aiden Masters each had hat tricks to pace the Jets attack. Euan Schofield, Sukhmun Hare and Patrick Conn popped in a pair of goals apiece while single tallies came from the hands of Bruno Marunica, Timmy Pourkazemi, Tony Giannatsis and Rudy Despaigne.
With the victory, the Jets moved on to the semi-finals and a clash with CAMO 1. It was a closely fought contest through the first two quarters with the Jets taking the opening quarter 2-1 and the teams tieing 2-2 in the second leaving the Jets with a slim 4-3 advantage at halftime.
A 3-0 third quarter proved to be the difference as the Jets bought their place in the national final with a 10-5 win. Schofield, Marunica and Richard Laurie each scored twice. Gonzalez, Despaigne, Hare and goalie Emirhan Ozdemir (with a pool length shot into the empty net after CAMO 1 had pulled its goalie for an extra attacker) rounded out the scoring.
In the final, one quarter (the second) against the Ottawa Titans would sink the Jets’ hopes of another national title. The teams tied the other three quarters but the Titans roared to a 6-2 second quarter en route to a 11-7 victory.
Hare and Conn notched two goals each while Gonzalez, Marunica and Schofield chipped in with singles.
The Jets men only lost one game all year, going undefeated throughout the regular season and first two rounds of the Nationals.

JETS WOMEN 4th at NATIONALS

The Toronto Golden Jets senior women finished 4th at the Canadian National Championships held at Markham’s Pan Am pool.
The Jets drew the Edmonton Tsunami in the quarter finals and quickly fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter before notching a tally to head into the second down 2-1.
The Jets offence came to life in the second quarter taking the period 3-1 to enter the second half leading 4-3.
The Jets stretched the lead to 5-3 but gave up a goal with only two seconds left in the third to carry a narrow one goal lead into the fourth.
The fourth quarter ended up being the Christi Bardecki show for the Jets as the 40+ year-old scored all four Jets goals and, with the score tied 7-7 with three minutes to go, dragged the team to a 9-7 victory with an even strength and power play goal.
Bardecki led all scorers with four markers. Tyanna Supreme struck for a pair of goals while Caitlyn Tiedje, Lauren Dundee and Kaitlyn Palmer each netted one.
The Jets received a strong game from third string goalie, Arushi Madan, who was pressed into service due to the absence of starter Rachael Jaffe (away competing internationally) and back-up Hana Truchla (concussion).
The next day, it was a semi-final match-up against the Pacific Storm (Vancouver) and this time it was the Jets who jumped out to a 2-0 early first quarter lead. However, the defence lapsed and gave up four unanswered goals to leave the Jets trailing 4-2 heading into the second period.
The Jets tightened up and won the second period 2-1 to trail by a single goal (5-4) at the half. Storm reversed that in the third quarter to restore its two goal lead (7-5).
The Jets scored early in the 4th quarter to pull with one but could not muster any more offence leaving the Storm to pull away for a 10-6 win.
Bardecki had a pair of goals as did Supreme. Dundee and Palmer again added singles. The loss put the Jets into the bronze medal game against the Calgary Renegades.
The Jets were further short-handed for the bronze medal game and it showed early as the Renegades roared out to a 5-2 first quarter lead. They increased the lead by a goal in each of the next two quarters before the teams sawed off the final period 1-1 as Calgary took the bronze medal with a convincing 10-5 win.
Ana Miroslavic led the Jets offence with a hat trick. Hannah Levin and Bardecki added singles.
While not the ending the Jets were looking for, the season was still a big success given the undefeated record in the Eastern Conference regular season – something to build on for next year.

JETS MEN WIN SECOND GOLD

The Toronto Golden Jets senior men recorded three wins and a tie in Montreal to win the gold medal at the second MLWP league weekend.
 
On the first night, right after driving for six hours, the team hopped out of their cars and into the pool to face off against Ottawa 3. Showing no sluggishness from the drive, the Jets jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead. Toronto followed that with a 7-2 second quarter to lead 12-3 at the half. From then on it was a pair of 5-2 quarters leading to a Jets 22-7 victory. Aiden Masters led the scorers with four goals. Sukhmun Hare, Bruno Marunica and Patrick Conn notched hat tricks. Tuna Tali, Timmy Pourkazemi and Euan Scoffield popped in a pair apiece while Tony Giannatsis, Cameron Hexter and James Glaser added singles.
 
The second day began very early for the Jets with a 8:30am game against one of the hosts, CAMO 2. Again the Jets jumped out to a 5-1 opening quarter lead. However, CAMO bounced back to tie the second period 2-2 leaving the Jets ahead 7-3 at the half. The Jets began to pull away with a 4-1 third quarter and really blew the game wide open with a 7-1 final period leading to a 18-5 win. Giannatsis, Hare and Rudy Despaigne each scored a hat trick to pace the Jets’ attack. Scoffield, Conn and Glaser all potted a pair of goals while Tali, Marunica and Richard Laurie rounded out the scoring with single markers.
 
In the afternoon, the Jets were up against another Montreal-based team, DDO. The game was a rematch of the last national championship final where DDO squeaked by the Jets. The two teams went back and forth evenly until the middle of the third quarter when the Jets grabbed a 8-6 lead heading into the final frame. However, DDO surged back with four straight goals to establish its own two goal advantage at 10-8. With less than two minutes remaining, the Jets pulled to within one and then tied the game up in the final minute.
 
On the final day, the Jets entered the gold medal game to face the other host team, CAMO 1. The game was hard fought throughout with CAMO grabbing an early lead only to see the Jets move out in front as the second half began. Jets goaltender Emirhan Ozdemir had an outstanding game stopping two breakaways and a penalty shot to keep the Jets close when it looked like the home side might pull away.
 
With the back-to-back gold medal weekends and an undefeated regular season, the Golden Jets will enter the national championships as the #1 seed out of the Eastern Conference. The finals will take place at the end of April at Markham’s Pan Am pool.

JETS WOMEN TAKE SECOND GOLD

The Toronto Golden Jets senior women traveled to Montreal for the final MLWP league weekend and used two wins and a tie to finish the regular season undefeated and win their second gold medal in a row.
 
It was an early rise and six hour drive for the team before jumping into the water to play Capital Wave. The Jets started quickly gaining a 4-2 first quarter lead. Then, the team exploded for five unanswered goals in the second period to go up 9-2 at the half. Another strong quarter (5-1) pushed the lead to 14-3 heading into the final frame and an eventual 16-6 victory. Twelve different Jets hit the scoresheet. Lauren Dundee led all scorers with a hat trick. Christi Bardecki and Serena Spencer both scored twice while Caitlyn Tiedje, Deena Charles, Vega Jones, Sarah August, Kaitlyn Palmer, Alexandra Lee, Chloe MacVicar, Julia Decaire and Evie Bland added singles.
 
A few hours later it was back in the pool to face the second place squad from St. Lambert (Montreal). Again the Jets leapt out to an early advantage ending the opening quarter ahead 3-1. The teams then traded 2-1 quarters with the Jets winning the second and St. Lambert the third. The Jets used a clean 2-0 final period to register a 8-4 win. Decaire paced the attack with a pair of goals. Bardecki, August, Dundee, Spencer, Bland and Jones each found the back of the net once.
 
Early the next morning the Jets squared off against the host CAMO club. The teams traded single markers in a tightly played opening quarter. The Jets then eked out consecutive one goal victories in the next two periods (2-1, 3-2). However, with fatigue setting in on the Jets players, CAMO roared back with three goals in the 4th quarter before the Jets salvaged a tie with a goal in the final few seconds of the game. Bardecki led the way with two goals. Bland, Dundee, Jones, Palmer and Julianna Hill notched single tallies.
 
It is the first time in the team’s history that a National League weekend tournament was won. The back-to-back gold medals meant the Jets will enter the National Championships as the #1 seed out of the Eastern Conference. The Finals will take place on the final weekend of April at Markham’s Pan Am pool.

UofT TO CONTINUE MASK MANDATE & SCREENING

Please note that the Council of Ontario Universities has announced that Ontario’s universities will maintain their COVID-19 vaccination and masking policies until at least the end of the current term.

The University of Toronto will maintain the requirement to wear masks in indoor spaces on all three campuses until at least the end of the academic term, including the exam period. Exceptions to this requirement can be found in the University’s Mask Guideline. As previously announced, we will also continue to require mandatory vaccination and health screening for the balance of the term.

JETS MEN WIN GOLD IN OTTAWA

The Toronto Golden Jets senior men won the gold medal at the first Major League weekend tournament in Ottawa.
The Jets opened the weekend on Friday night with a game against the Silver Jets and cruised to a 18-4 victory. Bruno Maunica led the Jets attack with six goals. Rudy Despaigne, Euan Scoffield and Aiden Masters all notched hat tricks. Sukhmun Hare popped in a pair of goals with James Glaser adding a single tally.
On Day 2, the Jets renewed an old rivalry with a game against CAMO 1 (Montreal). The game was a close fought contest each quarter with the Jets winning three of them by a single goal and tieing the other leading to a 11-8 win. Marunica again paced the attack with four goals. Despaigne and Hare each scored twice while Scoffield, Glaser and Richard Laurie tallied singles.
The Jets second game of the day was against Ottawa Titans 2. The Jets roared out to a 4-0 opening quarter lead and then won the second quarter 3-1 to lead 7-1 at the half. A 4-1 third quarter put the Jets up 15-2 heading into the final frame. A 6-2 fourth quarter gave the Jets a 21-4 victory. Marunica and Laurie both socred five times to lead the way for the Jets. Hare was right behind with four goals. Despaigne, Scoffield and Paul Spooner each scored twice. Cameron Hexter’s single meant that every Jets field player got on the board during the weekend.
Day 3 wound up as the gold medal game as the 3-0 Jets took on the 2-1 Ottawa Titans 1. The game was a physical battle and the Titans took the opening quarter 2-1. The Jets fought back in the second period to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. The lead was extended by one to 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter where the Jets won 3-1 to take the contest 10-6 and win the gold medal. Marunica, Despaigne and Glaser each had hat tricks with Hare providing the final tally.
The Jets will travel to Montreal March 11-13 for the final regular season league weekend which will determine the seeding for the National Championships at the end of April at the Markham Pan Am pool.

JETS WOMEN WIN GOLD!

 
The Toronto Golden Jets women traveled to Ottawa for the first Major League weekend tournament and went 3-0 to win the gold medal.
 
On Saturday, after traveling for five hours, the team got out of their cars and promptly got into the pool to take on the perennial powerhouse CAMO (Montreal). The Jets stunned CAMO jumping out to a 4-1 first quarter lead. CAMO won the second quarter 2-1 but the Golden Jets led 5-3 at the half. The Jets regained control of the game in the third quarter winning the frame 3-1 to take a 8-4 lead into the final quarter. The teams traded goals three times leaving the Jets with a surprising 11-7 victory. Deena Charles, Hannah Levin and Julianna Hill each netted a pair of goals while Lauren Dundee, Vega Jones, Evie Bland, Sarah Young and Christi Bardecki added singles.
 
It was a quick turnaround for the Jets who found themselves back in the pool a few hours later to take on the hometown Capital Wave squad. The teams each won 2-1 in the first two quarters to end up tied 3-3 at the half. The Jets surged ahead 5-3 by the end of the third before fatigue set in and the team ended up hanging on to eke out a 7-6 victory. Bardecki, at least two decades older than her teammates, led the way with a hat trick. Levin notched another pair while Dundee and Hill scored once each.
 
On Sunday morning, the undefeated Jets were up against the undefeated team from St. Lambert. Based on the previous day’s results, things didn’t look promising entering the game. While the Jets had managed to squeak by Capital Wave, St. Lambert had demolished Capital Wave 20-3. However, the Jets players came out firing on all cylinders and grabbed a stunning 2-0 first quarter lead. St. Lambert punched back in the second to take a 3-2 lead at the half. The Jets fought back to win the third quarter and knot things up 4-4 heading into the final quarter. The Jets then found another gear and shut out their opponents 3-0 to win 7-4 in what was the gold medal game. Bardecki again paced the attack with a pair of goals and got singles support from Levin, Dundee, Bland, Young and Chloe MacVicar.
 
The Jets now head to Montreal on the weekend of March 12-13 to play the final regular season weekend of games.

START DATE POSTPONED

Due to the on-going police presence and severe restriction of vehicle access into and around the UofT area, we have decided to postpone tomorrow’s tryout.

Also, in order to give ample time for parents to plan and for their children to have a proper tryout week, the Golden Jets first age group practices will occur as follows:

Thu    Mar   3    –  Central Tech High School  –  7pm   –    725 Bathurst St, Toronto, ON M5S 2R5  (northeast corner of Harbord)

Sat   Mar    5   –  UofT 50m Pool   –  12noon   –   55 Harbord Street  (southeast corner of Spadina)

Sun  Mar    7   –  UofT 50m Pool   –   5pm

This week will represent an opportunity to try practices as well as be evaluated.  After the end of the week, anyone wishing to practice will need to register on-line with Water Polo Canada AND remit the club fee.

We will be sending out a reminder on the entry process for UofT (whatever that process will be given that the Province will be opening up events to full capacity).

We apologize for the short notice about the change but the road closures only just occurred late last night and are still in effect now (early Saturday evening).
